The Pujar family hailed from Hasanapura in the Jevargi taluk of the Kalburgi district in North Karnataka. The family was returning to Bengaluru following a visit to their Jevargi home when the crash occurred.

The Rajajinagar traffic police said the accident occurred due to rash and negligent driving by the autorickshaw driver. A family friend of the Pujars who identified himself as Nagaraj said the Pujar family had migrated to Bengaluru only three years ago.

The parents and two sons were working as daily wage labourers in Bengaluru. “They came to the Yeshwanthapura railway station on a train from Kalburgi and hired an autorickshaw to get home but they ended up in a crash,” Nagaraj said.
