THE AMBERNATH police who arrested five persons Saturday for allegedly selling beef said a local Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) member, also arrested, was the brain behind it. Police identified the MNS member as Yusuf Shaikh.

Police said the four others who were arrested worked at the shop owned by Shaikh. Police said they were probing if the accused were linked to other cases of cows and buffaloes stolen from Ambernath areas for slaughter over the past year. “Shaikh is the main accused. The others were acting on his orders,” said senior inspector P Wagh. “We have sought their custody before court to find out if they are linked to other cases registered in our jurisdiction over stolen cows and buffaloes in the past one year.”

Besides Yusuf Shaikh, the others arrested are Riyaz Shaikh, Saqil Qureshi, Aazad Qureshi and Sajjad Qureshi.

On Saturday, police were tipped off about beef being sold in Shaikh’s shop. Police raided the shop, a temporary iron shed, around 6 am and arrested four persons. Shaikh was arrested from another location.
