A 28-YEAR-OLD prisoner undergoing trial in the murder of a Bajrang Dal activist in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka was murdered in Mysuru jail on Thursday. He was stabbed allegedly by another undertrial in the same jail, who us said to have been a friend of the Bajrang Dal man.
According to the police, Mustafa Kavoor, arrested in connection with the murder of Bajrang Dal’s Prashanth Poojary in October 2015, was stabbed to death in Mysuru jail by one Karan Shetty.
Shetty has been in Mysuru jail for the last two years in connection with multiple cases of assault and attempts to murder. Kavoor had been moved to the same jail from Mangaluru a few months ago.
“The suspect, Shetty, who is in prison, has claimed to have killed Kavoor over a personal rivalry. We will take him into custody for detailed interrogation to ascertain the exact motive of the murder,” Mysuru City Police Commissioner A Subramanyeshwara Rao said.
Officials from Mandi police station, where a case of murder has been registered, said Kavoor had had an argument with Shetty over Poojary’s murder, leading to Shetty attacking him. “Shetty stabbed Kavoor with a sharpened spoon,” a police officer said.
Kavoor was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the officer said.
Shetty had been moved from the Mangaluru prison to the Mysuru jail two years ago, reportedly after he was involved in fights with prisoners there. He was initially arrested in connection with an attempt to murder case but he was later found to be involved in several cases. Police suspect Shetty stole a spoon from the jail kitchen and used it to attack Kavoor.
Poojary, 29, who was a flower merchant by profession, was stabbed by six motorcycle-borne men in Moodbidre in Dakshina Kannada district on October 9 last year. The lone witness to the controversial murder, Vaman Poojary, allegedly committed suicide six days after the incident.
Mustafa Kavoor’s murder on Thursday comes a year after two prisoners were killed in Mangaluru jail in November last year.
