Arrested by the CBI on Sunday for allegedly issuing FCRA notices arbitrarily to several NGOs for financial gains, Anand Joshi, an under secretary in the home ministry, was placed under suspension on Wednesday.

“It has been 48 hours since the CBI arrested Joshi, and therefore, as a matter of routine procedure, he has been placed under suspension,” an MHA official said.

Joshi was shunted out of the home ministry’s foreigners division in January, reportedly over allegations that he was involved in dubious activities. Later, he was allegedly found to have been in illegal possession of a file pertaining to activist Teesta Setalvad’s NGO Sabrang Trust.

On May 9, the CBI registered a case against Joshi on a complaint from his senior, Additional Secretary (Foreigners) B K Prasad, of sending notices to NGOs arbitrarily and trading information for money.

The following day, Joshi had claimed he had not removed any file from the foreigners division. He had accused Prasad, who heads the division, of pressuring him because he had refused to accept money and give a clean chit to Ford Foundation that had earlier been placed on the ministry’s watchlist. Denying the allegations, Prasad has said the truth will come out in the CBI probe.
