He is survived by his wife, three daughters and son.

ADVERTISINGAdvertising stalwart A.G Krishnamurthy, aged 74, who was the Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Mudra Communications and founding father of MICA passed away after a brief illness at Hyderabad in the wee hours of Friday. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and son.

Incidentally, Friday also marked the silver jubilee or 25 years of the advent of MICA- the advertising institute nurtured by Krishnamurthy or AGK as he is popularly known to cater to the growing advertising industry with trained talent.

Having started his career as an assistant to Gira Sarabhai- one of the scions of the illustrious Sarabhai family of Ahmedabad, he later moved into Calico Mills’ Shilpi advertising as an account executive in 1972, and then to Reliance Industries as advertising manager in 1976 and later founded Mudra Communications – floated by Reliance in 1980 at Ahmedabad.

Having successfully steered Mudra as one of the top agencies in the country with brands like Vimal, Rasna and in the 1980’s, he later set up the Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad(MICA), now called MICA in 1991. Completing 25 years- the institute(MICA) was marking its genesis as ‘MICA day’. Calling his death ‘poignant and ‘profound’, Nagesh Rao- present Director of MICA said, “Today MICA has lost her parent, AGK, a dreamer, a builder, and a visionary.”

Sethu Iyer, MICA’s executive Registrar who worked with AGK at Mudra from 1989 to 2003 recalls, “While Mudra was AGK’s mission, MICA was his passion. When he founded MICA in 1991 it was, as he used to say, his way of repaying back to the advertising industry that had made him. He last visited MICA as the chief guest on its 14th Convocation in March 2009 and was very proud to see how his dream had shaped up.”

In his 3 decade long advertising stint AGK’s stewardship saw Mudra scale global heights and open an international office. He led several Gujarat-based brands like Rasna, NDDB’s Dhara, Wagh Bakri Tea, Paras Pharmaceutical’s products like Moov and Krack foot Cream, Ajanta Clocks, Zydus Cadila and Symphony Air Coolers among others to national popularity through Mudra Communications.

What started initially as the in-house advertising wing of Dhirubhai Ambani’s Reliance Textile Industries- with whom AGK had a close association, Mudra clocked a meteoric rise starting with a modest Rs 35 lakhs in the first year to making Rs 100 crores per annum in five years time.

One of the founder members of MICA and colleague at Mudra- Alan D’souza says, “My association dates back to the mid 80’s when I joined Mudra. The agency was small and growing and AGK was always encouraging us to do new things. I still recall that it was his idea to start an advertising institute- MICA from the basement of Mudra office where we offered short term programs to get good talent for the advertising industry. He was an inspirational man, a great thinker and a visionary.”

“I was first interviewed by AGK when I joined MICA in 2002. He was active even after he withdrew from the city and was immersed in scholarly work. He is the main architect and visionary of two of the leading institutions rooted in Ahmedabad including Mudra Communications and MICA,” said Arbind Sinha, Former Associate Director and Acting Director of MICA.

Known to be ‘media shy’, AGK retired from Mudra in 2003 and had moved to Hyderabad in his later years and established his own consultancy AGK Brand Consulting. He penned several books on advertising, entrepreneurship and on his clients and had visited Ahmedabad in April 2013 to launch his book ‘If you can Dream’.
