A few days after fielding party MP Bhagwant Mann to take on Deputy Chief Minster Sukhbir Singh Badal in the latter’s constituency of Jalalabad, AAP’s national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Thursday announced the candidature of an eye surgeon and activist Dr Balbir Singh against Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh from his pocket borough of Patiala (urban) Assembly constituency.

Kejriwal was addressing a rally at Samana when he announced Dr Singh’s candidature. A superspecialist in retina surgery, Dr Singh is a political greenhorn.

Known in the district for his contribution in free eye care for the poor, Dr Singh has worked closely with slum-dwellers in Patiala towards transforming their lives by helping them in sanitation and hygiene, training them as home nursing care help. His initiative brought him accolades. The party plans to project him as “messiah of the underprivileged” against the royal family scion of Patiala.

Dr Singh had participated in the JP movement and Anna Hazara movement and gave up his medical career to join the AAP ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha election. He also managed the campaign of Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi.

While addressing the rally, Kejrwial attacked Amarinder and Badals terming them as “most corrupt leaders of Punjab.”

“In Delhi, we have already shown that AAP has adopted zero tolerance against corruption by throwing out even our own party leaders found indulging in corruption,” he said.

“When I came to know that one of my ministers was trying to seek Rs 6 lakh bribe, I immediately threw him out of my Cabinet,” Kejriwal said, claiming that even the opposition as well as media did not have any clue about AAP’s minister’s corruption.

“On the other hand, Akali ministers Tota Singh and Bikram Majithia have been accused of corruption and drugs, but Badal failed to act against them,” Kejriwal said.

Similarly, he said, it was common knowledge that Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler were involved in the 1984 anti-Sikhs riots in Delhi, but the Congress failed to act against them.
