Bipin Patel, an accused in the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case, on Wednesday won Asarva seat of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for the fourth consecutive term on a BJP ticket. He was the BJP corporator in 2002 when the riots broke out at the society in which 69 people were killed. He had also won the civic elections in 2005 and 2010. After the result was announced, a jubilant Patel could only say that “BJP has won a thumping majority once again”, when his supporters lifted him on their shoulders and proceeded on a victory march which started from LD Engineering College, where the counting was in progress. He later led a procession from his constituency in Asarva, where Gulberg Society is located.
According to the chargesheet, Patel was spotted in the mob outside the Society wielding a sword. He is facing charges of unlawful assembly and murder, among others.
