Geetanjali, a 30-year-old resident of Sector 8, Panchkula, was shot dead at the Police Lines parade ground in Gurgaon on July 17, 2013.

Garg was posted as Chief Judicial Magistrate, Gurgaon, at the time. The CBI had arrested Garg on September 8 this year on charges of dowry death. His father, Kewal Krishan Garg, and mother, Rachna Garg, have also been chargesheeted for the same offence.

While Garg is currently in judicial custody, the court had issued a stay on the arrest of his parents until further notice.

The chargesheet stated, “Accused and his parents demanded huge dowry from Geetanjali’s parents… who gave cash worth Rs 51 lakh, 101 gold coins, household items and a Skoda Laura car as dowry…”

It added, “During investigation, oral and documentary evidence has substantiated the allegations of further demand of dowry in the form of a Skoda Superb car worth Rs 21,63,000 from Geetanjali’s parents at the time of marriage of Navdeep Garg, younger brother of accused Ravneet Garg, in 2008. To meet this demand, payment of Rs 21,63,000 was made by the parents from the account of their firm, M/s Aggarwal Refractory Pvt Ltd.”

“There were persistent demands by the accused persons on various occasions/festivals, which were met by the parents for smooth running of her marital life. Investigation also revealed that Ravneet Garg and Rachna Garg pressured Geetanjali to have a male child after undergoing sex determination test against her wishes, due to which she was always under constant mental stress,” it said.

In 2011, Garg and his parents demanded a plot in Sonipat from Geetanjali’ parents, it said.

“Again bowing under pressure, the parents of the deceased purchased one plot in Block C of Omaxe City… Garg clandestinely transferred the said plot in his name on July 8, 2013 — barely nine days before the death of his wife, without informing anyone…,” the CBI chargesheet said.

The CBI investigation further revealed that Garg and his parents demanded another Rs 50 lakh from Geetanjali’s parents to purchase a house in Sector 25, Panchkula. This demand could not be fulfilled.

Garg also used to demand money from his in-laws through his wife to meet his day-to-day expenses, the chargesheet said. Geetanjali was also harassed for money to pay for the admission of their two daughters. She sought help from her brother, who gave her Rs 2 lakh, the chargesheet said.
