Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday asked Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to focus on hospitals and education now after having made good roads, airports and even becoming a state with surplus power. Jaitley told Sukhbir to focus on these two sectors at a time when the state has seen unprecedented development in all sectors and also make that its poll plank for the Assembly elections. He also stressed the need for a return of the SAD-BJP government for peace and harmony in the state.

Jaitley was addressing a rally after the Bhoomi Poojan for the domestic airport at Adampur in Jalandhar. While praising Punjab and comparing it with Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “Earlier, we used to say that Gujarat has progressed a lot. But now, we can see that Punjab, too, has progressed a lot despite being a small state geographically.”

While addressing Sukhbir, Jaitley said, “You have made good roads, airports, and good city infrastructure in Punjab besides becoming a power surplus state. Now, you need to work in two other sectors and that is hospitals and education. Centre has already given an AIIMS to Punjab and provided Rs 30,000 crore for the road network of the state.”

About the Adampur airport, Jaitley said it was a long-pending demand of the people of Doaba and once it becomes operational, it would benefit the people of Punjab as well as that of neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

“Congress wanted to divide the country but this alliance – SAD-BJP — has brought peace in the state under the leadership of Punjab CM PS Badal,” he stated.

Jaitley further said that in the past 20 years, SAD-BJP has ruled for 15 years and during the Congress tenure from 2002-2007, there was no progress. The SAD-BJP government had started development work in 2007 from where it had left off in 2002.

During his speech, Sukhbir said Punjab has now two international and four domestic airports while its neighbour Haryana does not even have one airport. Both Haryana and the Centre have BJP governments.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said the opening of an airport means to get connected globally, adding there was huge development in Punjab and called AAP leaders “nautankibaaj” who indulge in ‘vinash’ (destruction) politics.

Sheetal Vij shares stage with Jaitley

Two days after he was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the recovery of new currency notes worth Rs 3 lakh, industrialist Sheetal Vij shared the stage with Union FM Arun Jaitley during the Adampur airport function on Friday. ED comes under Jaitley’s jurisdiction.
