HPU plans 3 new campuses,to woo India Inc for funds

The vision document of the HP university will be released on August 15 and would spell out the new plans of the university.

In a move to enhance visibility of the Himachal Pradesh University,both nationally and internationally,new Vice-Chancellor ADN Vajpai rolled-out a three-pronged action-plan to set up three new campuses,mobilise funding from big industrial houses and trusts and get the best teaching faculty by filling up nearly 140 vacant posts.

The vision document of the university,currently under formulation,will be released on August 15 and would spell out the new plans of the university,perhaps for first time in past 42 years.

The university,currently has only one campus at Dharamshala and now two more will be set up – one of these in the tribal district of Lahual-Spiti and another near Una. Possibilities of another at Solan are also not ruled out to meet onslaught of the private universities.

Vajpai told mediapersons here that a three-day Foundation Day celebrations of the university,beginning July 22,will trigger a series of new initiatives including signing of MOUs with Sri Lanka and Syria for major collaborations. Syrian ambassador to India,Riad Kamel Abbas will be present at the opening day function of the university. Governor Urmila Singh will inaugurate the function.

In the three-day event,which see Union Minister for Communication and IT Sachin Pilot attending the valedictory function,has a busy schedule of releasing university’s research journal and anthem. Vajpai,who took-over as Vice-Chancellor recently said the university has written to the government to return its land at Potter Hill and Ganahatti for expansion of the campus. “Three things are being done simultaneously – meeting the paucity of the space,mobilising resources on the lines of Madan Mohan Malviya asking industrial houses,trusts and philanthropists to contribute towards universities development and recruiting the best teachers.”

Besides the government’s funding,the University will mobilize internal resources including hike in certain charges and then approach the business houses,MLAs and MPs for providing funds.
