Hundreds of labourers and brick kiln owners gathered at Sangrur’s Banasar Baag area and protested against the Centre’s demonetisation move. They also blocked the national highway and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
Harwinder Singh Sekhon, state president of All Brick Kilns Association, Punjab, said demonetisation had worsened the existing financial crisis in this business. “The brick kilns are already facing losses for the last four years. Now, there is no sale of bricks but we need to pay the labour as 200-250 employees are working at every brick kiln,” he said. “The winter season is at peak and labourers need woolen clothes. We demand at least Rs 3 lakh in cash after every 15 days, ATM machines at brick kilns and relaxation from VAT,” said Sekhon.
