Arpita Ghosh, Trinamool Congress, Lok Sabha, speaks to Abantika Ghosh
Trinamool MPs marched to Rashtrapati Bhawan at the start of the winter session and met the President again the day it ended. How was it different?
The Trinamool’s position on demonetisation being an economic disaster and torturing millions of Indians remained unchanged from day one. Mamata Banerjee has clearly and consistently expressed her views. In the early stages few agreed with her. Today over 150 MPs from eight political parties jointly signed the memorandum to the President. Even in Parliament the Opposition has been united.
This session has been a washout. Isn’t it a waste of public money?
I agree. But even as a first-time parliamentarian, I know the basic rule that the government is responsible for running Parliament. You could see on TV how treasury MPs were disrupting the House.
You have been one of the shouters for your party. Is that an identity you want for yourself?
When the government is so arrogant with a brute majority in Lok Sabha, we have to do all within the rules of parliamentary democracy. Why don’t you ask the same question to MPs of ruling party carrying placards and shouting and ministers disrupting?
This session saw floor coordination among Opposition parties. Will there be more of that outside?
The session is over. My party is meeting on December 22, when future strategy will be decided. I can assure you Mamata Banerjee has started this movement on behalf of the people.
Who is the leader of this rainbow opposition?
People of India are the leader of this opposition. My leader Mamata Banerjee is holding the flag for them. This is about a movement, not about claiming leadership.
