Since it was first exposed in 2013, the solar scam has been haunting Kerala politics and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The story starts with one couple, Biju Radhakrishan and Saritha S Nair, duping several persons, promising to give solar energy solutions or to make them partners in windmill projects. In fact, the government exchequer had not suffered any loss in the cheating drama. Many of the duped only wanted to get their money back, while others want to hide the fact they were cheated.

However, the solar scam is still hot news in Kerala because the relations Nair had maintained, both real and alleged, with Congress leaders, ministers, CM’s personal staff, bureaucrats and police officers.

Nair’s mobile phone call details revealed to what extent she had networks in political and bureaucratic circles and how these men had been smitten by the young woman, who now enjoys a star value in visual media. Several leaders, state ministers and former union ministers were among those who had close links with her. At one time, Nair described her story as the fate of a woman entrepreneur, abused and cheated by politicians whom she had met.

The crux of the issue is Nair’s relation with politicians. In Kerala society, these relations give enough room for blackmailing. Nair had publicly stated that Kerala would not withstand if she reveals at one go the names of leaders who had abused her.

Chandy had admitted he had a closed door meeting with Radhakrishnan in Kochi, but could not reveal the family matters discussed out of decency. Again, it is Nair’s links with his party colleagues that force Chandy to remain mum about that meeting.

Nair had tried to blackmail leaders of her choice. Radhakrishnan too tried his bit of blackmail drama. Both needed money for out of court settlements with the investors they had duped.

Several political leaders like P C George too had used “Nair leaks” to tarnish their rivals.

With elections round the corner, blackmailing over “video clips” is sure to hit the state at frequent intervals.

Now, Kerala is eagerly waiting to see whether Nair’s clips related to Radhakrishnan’s disclosures would appear in TV channels.
