The Kollywood box office never looked so crowded. While Vijay’s much-awaited film Bairavaa had announced that it will open in theatres on Pongal a long time ago, at least five other films have now officially thrown their hat into the ring for the long festival weekend.
Days after the makers of GV Prakash Kumar’s Bruce Lee decided to release the film on Pongal, Arun Vijay’s Kuttram 23 has also joined the race. Jai’s comedy film Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal, CV Kumar’s Adhey Kangal’and Krishna’s Yaakai have also slated their respective movies as Pongal release.
Actor Suriya’s Singam 3 release, meanwhile, has been postponed and makers are yet to reveal the new date. The release date of the film has been changed three times owing to several reasons. While the film was expected to open on December 16, it postponed the release as requested by the makers of Dhruva. Later, the makers have again postponed the release date, citing external factors beyond their control.

Singam 3, which was earlier scheduled to release on the Christmas weekend, was expected to dominate the box office till Pongal. Now the buzz is that the much-anticipated cop film may hit the screens on the big festival. If that’s the case, then other films have no option but to back off.
Vijay’s Bairavaa has been the favourite of the trade since forever and Suriya’s forthcoming film is by far the most popular installment in the Singam franchise. Exhibitors and distributors, obviously favour these two big films over others. Meanwhile, with only 900 odd screens in Tamil Nadu, theatres cannot accommodate so many films at the same time.
So it is either Bairavaa vs Singam 3, which will surely be a treat for fans of both the stars, or it will be Bairavaa vs five other films. In the latter scenario, of 900 plus screens, the Vijay starrer is likely to be allotted more than 400 screens and the rest of the films will have to share the remaining screens, which runs a high risk of box office loss.
