To sing or not to sing? That’s the dilemma every singer will now face in the wake of the Sonu Nigam Jet Airways singing controversy when a fan makes a request to hum a song or two while travelling in flights. While some do, others politely avoid such situations.
IndianExpress.com spoke to a few singers to find out how they entertain such fan requests.
Udit Narayan: It has happened with me many times. I avoid such things because singing in flight could entertain some and disturb others. On many occasions, I have been requested to sing by co-passengers and air hostesses. But I politely decline it as there are rules that you have to follow. As a celebrity you have to be responsible both for your own actions as well as about other people around you. Apni marzi ka kuch bhi nahi kar sakte.
Kailash Kher: Yes, I have found myself in many odd situations. Sometimes artists are emotional and they get carried away by the love expressed by passengers and people who impress you with praise. But by the grace of God, my training has been such that when people praise me a lot, I feel koi lootera aaya hai lootne ke liye. I handle it with a smile. Sometimes you feel, you meet really classy and sophisticated people but the moment you accept their compliments and say thank you they will even follow you to the toilet and say Ek Line Sunaayenge. Allah ke bandhe Sunaayenge. It’s like when I give you my finger, you will hold my entire hand just because I am not rude. So, when I get such requests especially in flights where people are in a nice different, I manage to politely decline it. I don’t get carried away easily.
Armaan Malik: It has happened with me and it gets odd to sing even though we like singing. It gets wierd to say no but I tackle them by saying we can click a picture and since I am good with selfies I indulge in pictures and that is how I tackle it.
Sona Mohapatra: When it comes to music, it’s always a pleasure. Now a days its mostly about a selfie or autographs and less about music.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya: I have done it many times. If we say no, people will say we have attitude. Whatever Sonu did was great. I don’t have that much greatness and I refuse. I have sung only once in a plane. I was on my way to Malaysia and there people are crazy about SRK. When they got to know that I have sung many of SRK’s songs, they requested me to sing. I started singing and then the crew members asked me to sing into the phone. I generally don’t oblige now. It was Sonu’s greatness that he obliged.
Aishwarya Nigam: Sonu Nigam is a legend. Sonu Nigam didn’t know there is a rule that one couldn’t sing into the phone. You can’t blame Sonu Nigam. Even I once did the same thing. I was off to Assam in a flight once. A few passengers requested me to sing and soon a crowd gathered around my seat. The air hostess then came and asked me to sing on the phone. It is Sonu’s greatness that he sang for the passengers.
