When it came to providing soulful numbers or party anthems — Bollywood’s euphemism for anything that can make you get up and dance at the next wedding you attend — for an obliging public, the year 2016 saw the industry looking backwards. Rather than providing fresh compositions full of life and zest, they took out old chartbusters, gave them a thorough dusting, added a bit of Badshah and beats to them and you were good to go.

While we don’t mind a little bit of nostalgia now and then, a whole year full of them has made us feel sick in the soul. Dear Bollywood, for 2017, can you stop paying ‘tributes’ and give us something that is mint fresh?

This year has been an assault with filmmakers using retreaded versions of old songs to repackage their films. There was certainly a lack of originality in songs. We were served the same old wine in a new bottle. Filmmakers, in their defence, say that they are paying tribute to original composer or song. Like really? We bring you all those songs that were adulterated to suit your mood at a party.

Humma Humma ( OK Jaanu)

This new number from OK Jaanu has killed the spirit of the original song. It was only in the 90s that we were introduced to this song. The original song had so much life in it. The new version by A R Rahman didn’t go down well with many listeners. Going by the comments circulating on social media, some find the rap by Badshah completely unnecessary.

Kala Chasma ( Baar Baar Dekho)

No, this song isn’t original. Featuring Katrina Kaif and Siddhartha Malhotra, Kala Chasma is your ideal foot-tapping number from this year. However, this was a new version of Amar Arshi’s original hit, Tenu Kala Chasma Jachta Ve. This 2005 song was composed by Kam Dhillon. The original song carried a typical Punjabi bhangra rhythm.

Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le ( Dear Zindagi)

This soulful original by Ilaiyaraaja was recreated by Amit Trivedi for Dear Zindagi. The original song sung by Sudesh Wadkar remains a matchless ode to life. It’s brilliant song that evokes a feeling of gloom and happiness, loss and satisfaction, love and longing at the same time. It had a certain innocence. The new version is sung by Amit Trivedi, however, seems like a half-hearted effort that eventually tampered with the spirit of the original song. And the recent one sung by Alia Bhatt made a travesty of a rare achievement by a Hindi song.

Haseeno ka Deewana ( Kaabil)

Amitabh Bachchan may not be one of the best dancers. However, his on-screen presence can raise an ordinary song to another level. In the original song, you can hardly notice anything other than Bachchan dancing with the lightbulb suit. In the new version, however, you feel that Urvashi Rautela is trying too hard to hold your attention.

An Evening in Paris ( Ae Dil Hai Mushkil )

With An Evening in Paris, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil went a step ahead to revamp those old songs. The song, An Evening in Paris, wasn’t even in the film. That was an extra song that was released post ADHM’s theatre release.

Aaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo: ( Ae Dil Hai Mushkil)

Another song from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that was recreated was Aaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo. Actors Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan danced on this number in a nightclub. Aaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo was written by Fayyaz Hashmi and was popularised by Habib Wali Mohammad who lent his voice to this song in a Pakistani movie Badal Aur Bijli. The song is also sung by Asha Bhosle. The new version featuring Ranbir and Aishwarya is definitely high on style.

Laila O Laila ( Raees)

Raees will be released next year. Its song Laila O Laila featuring Sunny Leone is already making waves across social media even though it is yet to be released. The original song was composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Teri Fariyaad ( Tum Bin 2)

The original ‘Teri Fariyaad’ song from Tum Bin was sung by Jagjit Singh. And Jagjit Singh did complete justice to this soulful ghazal. The new rendition from Tum Bin 2 is sung by Rekha Bharadwaj. The song is penned down by Shakeel Azmi with references to the original ghazal by Faaiz Anwar.

Mahi Ve (Wajah Tum Ho)

Don’t you think that Mahi Ve from film Kaante is too soon to be recreated? Makers might have not given heed to the fact, though. The original song was sung by Richa Sharma and composed by Anand Raj Anand. In new version that is composed by Gourov Roshin and sung by Neha Kakkar, we see Zareen a scintillating Zareen Khan dancing on this hit number

Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (Wajah Tum Ho)

Do we even need to even remind you where you might have heard of this song? The original song from movie Blackmail featuring Dharmendra and Rakhi was composed by Kalyanji Anandji. The new version of Wajah Tum Ho is sung by Armaan Malik and Tulsi Kumar.
