Force 2 quick movie review: Let the bad guy win

Force 2 quick movie review: A one-note John Abraham, a clueless Sonakshi Sinha fail to give this film heft. What props up this sequel is its high-octane action and a villain who is having too much fun.

Force 2 cast: John Abraham, Sonakshi Sinha, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Adil Hussain

Force 2 director: Abhinay Deo

Take a RAW agent who has no chance of becoming employee of the year anytime soon. Add a cop with a death wish who uses his shirt as a weapon of mass destruction. Stir it with talented actors who are not sure why they were hired in the first place. Add a script which has its moments but is heavily indebted to American films. Now for good measure, add a villain who is thoroughly enjoying himself and kickass action. And that, in a nutshell, is Force 2.

John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha film has been touted as a patriotic film which aims to give the RAW agents their due. These undercover operatives live and die for their countries but the country disowns them without compunction if they are caught. Given the political climate of the country, there can hardly be a better theme for the film.

Milking it for all it is worth is not such a smart move though. Making Sonakshi’s KK, a RAW agent, a caricature of a character is even worse. For most of the film, you hear her say, “Nahi Yash nahi,” as John’s Yash flexes his biceps, takes off his shirt and gets to work. The dialogue gets tiring after a while, so does her portrayal as a lightweight.

The one who eats the scenery every time he is on the screen is the film’s bad guy Tahir Raj Bhasin. If he impressed in Mardaani, consider this one an encore. The clueless good guy seem to be trapped in a web of his making and his obvious pleasure as he plays a cat-and-mouse game with the two leads is the fun part of the film. When he taunts John and Sonakshi’s characters are probably some of the best scenes of the film.

That and the break-neck speed at which the action unfurls keep the movie bearable. As John and Tahir race across the scenic Budapest – at times on rooftops, on others sitting in cars hurtling at breakneck speed – the film has your attention. Force 2’s climax has been shot on the lines of Hardcore Henry and the experience is decidedly interesting.
You have an epiphany during a rehashed Kaate Nahi Katte Ye Din in the film. Force 2 should have taken a leaf out of its hero’s book – all muscle and no flab. Because behind all the drama, it has makings of an absorbing film.
