

After last Friday’s entertainment bonanza, ‘Bajragni Bhaijaan’ starring superstar Salman Khan, we have Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Masaan’ hitting screens today.
Having won two prestigious awards at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, ‘Masaan’ stars Richa Chadha along with newcomers Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi and Sanjay Mishra.

The film tells the tale of four different lives on the river Ganga. While Richa plays the role of a woman suffering after a sexual encounter goes wrong, Shweta’s character is a girl in love with a boy (Vicky) from a lower caste, who burns dead bodies for a living.

‘Masaan’ is said to be a beautiful coming-of-age film in the colourful streets of Varanasi, but outlining the dark and gritty reality faced in a small town.

The film has already been screened for members of the film fraternity who have been showering praise on Ghaywan’s directorial debut. “It is one of the finest films Hindi cinema has made. It is perfect. The performance, direction, camera work, acting, writing were all unbelievable. It’s a very good film from any standard in the world,” said lyricist Javed Akhtar.

Whether ‘Masaan’ will be able to stop the amazing run of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ at the box office remains to be seen.
