STATING that poverty has increased in CPM-ruled states and accusing the Congress of being mired in corruption, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged the electorate in Kerala to vote for change.

Addressing his last election rally in the state, at Tripunithura near here, Modi said poverty and violence had increased in CPM-ruled states and added that the party was against development. He also accused the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre of churning out “fresh stories of corruption day after day”. “If the Congress in Delhi converted coal mines into fields of scams, in Kerala they turned solar energy into an area of corruption,” the PM said.

In contrast, Modi said, the BJP-ruled states are a picture of development and progress. “There is round-the-clock power supply in BJP states. There are new schools, new colleges and new roads,” he said.

The Prime Minister also accused the Congress and the CPM of deceiving the people of Kerala for the last 50 years. The two were doing dramabaji (enacting dramas) in Kerala as they help each other in times of need and not keen on emergence of a third force, he the gathering at Tripunithura.

“You have mistaken these two parties as different entities. They have forced you to believe that they are different and hence they are engaged in confrontation dramas,’’ he told the gathering at Tripunithura.

Modi also said he was shocked to hear from bureaucrats from Kerala that governments favoured and kept away civil servants depending on which party was in power. “How a government discriminate against a section of bureaucrats. If the NDA is voted to power in Kerala, we will give due respect to all bureaucrats,” he said.

The PM, however, did not make any reference to his previous rally in the state, where his comments comparing Kerala with Somalia have drawn flak, particularly on Twitter.
