President Pranab Mukherjee has given the nod to the Union Human Resouce Development Ministry to conduct a probe into allegations levelled against the Vice Chancellor of the Allahabad University.
As reported by the Indian Express on October 4, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has received two proposals from the HRD Ministry recommending an inquiry into allegations of financial, administrative and academic irregularities against Aligarh Muslim University V-C Zameeruddin Shah and Allahabad University V-C RL Hangloo.
“The President has approved the proposal for a fact-finding inquiry into the complaint against the V-C alleging administrative and other irregularities,” a senior official said.
The Ministry needs the President’s nod before instituting such inquiries as he is the Visitor of all central universities.
The Allahabad University’s VC was in news recently for lashing out against political interference in the working of the University. He assumed office in December last year during Irani’s tenure as HRD Minister.
The HRD Ministry will now issue a showcause to Allahabad University seeking an explanation on why an inquiry should not be instituted to look into complaints of financial, administrative and academic irregularities. If they don’t find the response satisfactory, the Ministry will launch a Visitorial Inquiry.
During the tenure of Smriti Irani as the HRD Minister, the heads of Visva-Bharati University and Pondicherry University were fired on the grounds of administrative, academic and financial irregularities. Inquiries were also initiated against the IGNOU V-C, former head of Delhi University and the Jamia Millia Islamia V-C.
