Government-run Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) principals may soon be held accountable for the performance of their Class 12 students in Board exams. The principals in question could be made to undergo transfers or given punishment postings.

As reported by The Indian Express in June this year, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) had issued showcause notices to 240 school principals over unsatisfactory performance in this year’s Class XII Board examinations.

There are 1135 KV schools with almost 1.2 million students in the country. The pass percentage of the KVs for the 2016 Board examination was 95.46 per cent, while the national average was 83.05 per cent, the report said.

The number of principals who have received “hard” postings – implying that they have been shifted to less prominent schools or shunted off to schools in remote areas – is 50.

“The idea is to make teachers and principals accountable. KVs have become a brand name and our results are better than private schools. We are focusing entirely on learning outcomes,” a source said.

Over 200 KV principals have received notices by the regulatory body for these schools, the Kendriya Vidyala Sangathan (KVS). They faced punishment as the KVS was not happy with their replies. According to sources, only those principals received notices where the passing percentage did not touch 90 per cent. Transfers were handed to “extreme” cases to principals of schools where the pass percentage had dropped by more than 42 per cent in the previous year, the report says.

More than a dozen principals have been denied a posting of their choice after having served at “hard stations” already. Many are let off with warnings or cancellation of promotions.

However, those principals whose students have scored 98 to 100 per cent have been given incentives such as choice in postings or transfers, among others, according to the report.
