Amidst speculation on the IIMs adopting the government’s reservation policy for socio-economically backward sections, the 4th Pan-IIM World Management Conference on Tuesday held at IIMA campus saw IIMs acknowledge special efforts done by institutes in this regard.

The HRD Ministry had earlier this year asked IIMs if they followed SC/ST/OBC quota policy in faculty hiring, triggering a nationwide debate. Even as 19 of the IIMs, including the newer ones, were represented, 11 IIM directors were part of the conference.

Speaking on a new exercise where SC/ST candidates were being groomed into future faculty, Gautam Sinha, IIM Kashipur director, said, “We have just embarked on a special drive to bring in SC/ST doctoral students into the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) and while they (students) are doing their FPM, we would also train them, develop them to become faculty in the IIM system, so this has just started. Five years down the line we will find its result… When we sit together and discuss it may be a small thing, this is not rocket science and this was always on the cards on how to bring these people on board. We said we will bring them in as FPM scholars and also while they are doing their PhD research we will nurture them specifically to become faculties at IIMs. These are things that get shared so others can also know.”

Sources close to the development said that few IIMs were mulling on coming up with a joint FPM programme for students of the reserved category so that they can contribute more faculty for the IIMs and also tide over the burning issue of reservation. The Indian Institute of Management director Ashish Nanda, who had earlier said that implementing reservation was a mere suggestion by the ministry, Tuesday said that IIMs are more ready to learn from each other and coordinate in some areas.

Nanda said, “So they (IIM-Kashipur) are starting that (special drive for SC/STs) and we will learn from them and see how that grows…. We are very much aware that diverse faculty that have had different life experiences teaching our students. We particularly want to make sure that people who are socio-economically backward from the margins be in the classroom and share their knowledge to students. Each IIM is committed to encouraging people from all weaker backgrounds and under represented minorities… while maintaining the highest quality standards.”

IIM-Raipur recently advertised special FPM programme for SC/ST candidates following suggestions from the HRD Ministry.
