The encouraging performance in the Delhi University students’ union polls has spurred the National Student Union of India (NSUI) to plan campaigns against the Akhilesh Yadav government’s unemployment allowance scheme across university and college campuses in Uttar Pradesh.

A high-level meeting headed by NSUI in-charge Girish Kumar was organised in Lucknow today, where it was decided that NSUI would launch various campus campaigns including signature campaigns on “employment generation rather than unemployment allowance”.

Kumar was in the state capital today for a meeting with NSUI office-bearers. In order to spread the message about its campaigns and boost its cadres before student union elections across the state,NSUI has called a zonal convention of western Uttar Pradesh in Meerut on Monday. The convention will be the first organisational function to be attended by the new state president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee,Nirmal Khatri.

“The UP government is cheating youngsters by providing a selected group with unemployment allowance. Since there is a larger number of young unemployed people in Uttar Pradesh,we will take up signature campaigns across all campuses stressing on employment generation rather than unemployment allowance from government coffers. We will also hold discussions about employment opportunities generated in the state so far,” said Rahul Sachan,NSUI zonal state president, central Uttar Pradesh.

“We will also take up the issue of free distribution of laptops to selected students, which contradicts the promise of the UP government to give laptops and tablets to all the students across the state,” he added.

Since election in majority of the colleges will start in the next 15-20 days,he said that NSUI will be starting the campaign soon. “Senior leaders were here to give us guidance on planning the future campaigns and now we will take it forward as hardly any time is left for student union elections here. Student polls in UP will take place after a gap of five years,so our focus will also be to highlight the candidates with a clean image, who will follow the Lyngdoh committee guidelines,” said Sachan.

Sources said that during the poll process,NSUI plans to bring the newly elected representatives in Delhi University student polls for campaigning in UP as well. NSUI also plans to actively involve Khatri in its campaign and planning.

“After a long time,we got a state president who,on the very first day in office decided to visit the Youth Congress office and met the office-bearers and NSUI away from the crowd of senior leaders. We hope that in the future also he will actively participate in our programmes” said Youth Congress central zone president Tarun Patel, who was also at the meeting on Sunday.
