Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has alleged that the BJP-led government, in not revealing the details of the help given to Lalit Modi, against whom a blue corner notice issued by the DRI was pending, has raised the suspicion that it was done at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We only wanted the union government to give all details of the issue related to Lalit Modi but instead they avoided revealing it. The prime minister and Lalit Modi are close as per an e-mail communication of Lalit Modi. Thus, we wanted to know who was exactly behind providing help to Lalit Modi. Was it external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj or was she doing it at behest of someone else,” said Chavan.
The Congress wanted an inquiry into it which could be done after seeking the resignation of those allegedly involved, he said.
Chavan said that the BJP when in opposition had opposed the bill tabled by UPA on increasing FDI in the insurance sector and the GST.
“The Congress supported the insurance bill while it did not support the GST bill as the union government has made changes in the draft that was prepared by the UPA. The BJP-led government does not want to discuss the changes with the political party with the second largest strength in the lok sabha,” he added.
Also, the BJP has been trying to push amendments to the land acquisition law passed during the tenure of UPA. Chavan said, “The BJP had then supported the bill. The bill had ensured that the industries will have to shell out more money for acquiring land but the BJP-led government was trying to change it to please the industrialists.”
