University asks UGC for Rs 25 cr-grant to build sports facility

The UGC provides around Rs 25 cr over a period of five years to create sport infrastructure and other things related to sports.

Savitribai Phule Pune University has applied for a grant of over Rs 25 crore from the University Grants Commission to build its own state-of-the-art sports facility. It has already received an amount of Rs 1.7 crore from the UGC for a shooting range and an indoor hall for indoor games, said vice chancellor W N Gade, at a press conference on Friday.

“After receiving this grant, the varsity will be more equipped for indoor games like table tennis, judo, badminton etc. We already have a good lawn tennis court which is being used by students and others every day. We would like to increase the sports set-up of the university and encourage students in sports,” said Gade.

Gade also said that the varsity has applied for a grant of over Rs 25 crore from the UGC to make a centre for excellence in sports. “Under the centre of excellence in sports category, the UGC provides around Rs 25 crore over a period of five years to create sport infrastructure and other necessary things related to sports in the varsity. This grant will be given to the five universities from the country and we are hoping to get it,” said Gade.

Praising students who have won medals in the All India Inter University competitions in different parts of the country, Gade said that 10 gold medals have been won by SPPU students in cross-country sports, athletics, archery, gymnastics, power lifting, bodybuilding, Malkhamb and other such sports.

The ‘lifetime achievement award’ by the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will be conferred to seven distinguished personalities on February 10 who have done exceptional work in their field.

Anil Avchat, a social activist, Dilip Prabhavalkar, an actor, Nilima Mishra, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee and social worker, Sindhutai Vikhe Patil, known for social work and work in education, Bebilalji Sancheti, worker in education and president of Prabhandh Samiti, SNJB, Chandwad, Yashwant Manohar, a writer and N S Pharande, a politician will be conferred this award at the varsity’s 66th anniversary of its Foundation Day. Sudhir Mungantiwar, a cabinet minister of finance and planning, and forest departments in the Govt of Maharashtra, will be the chief guest for the programme.

Reacting to Sajag Nagrik Manch’s allegation that the varsity has not taken building permission for a few buildings, has failed to pay property tax for various buildings and has no occupation letter of a few buildings, Gade said, “To take the varsity to an international level, there is a need for infrastructure. According to some government rules, establishments can be started even if they have not got construction permission yet. Also we have applied for the building permission of various buildings in campus but it is pending with the PMC.”
