Students come up with quake alert system

They would be doing an experimental forecast this year followed with real time data in the next monsoon season.

With the recent spate of landslides in the state, Centre for Citizen Science, a student-based group working in the field of science has launched the landslide prediction system, Satark (Warning) to identify potential landslide occurrences in real time by using model rainfall forecasts and satellite derived rainfall estimates combined with the surface data.

They would be doing an experimental forecast this year followed with real time data in the next monsoon season.

According to the vice-president of the group Dr JV Kulkarni, the system will operate in three stages – watch stage, alert stage and the warning stage.

Based on the satellite and IMD forecast and using rainfall intensity-duration of threshold curve-the prediction of landslide will be given one day in advance.
