Pune, the seat of education, has been emerging as an innovation hub too. Industrial growth along with increasing initiatives of colleges to boost innovation has provided a perfect environment for the students and budding entrepreneurs to become innovators.

“Pune has a wide base of quality educational institutes including engineering and science colleges. The industrial growth especially in information technology and auto sector is phenomenal that provides students easy accessibility to industry people. These two factors have been proving instrumental for the innovative minds,” said Siddharth Jabade, coordinator of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Facilitation Centre of Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT).

Milind Joshi, president of Pune chapter of IIT Bombay Alumni Association that conducts an annual competition titled ‘Innovations’ ,said the event has been started to provide a platform for budding entrepreneurs who have proved the worth of their products. “They get to showcase their products before industry people. We are working as a bridge between them and industry,” he said.

“Though the competition is all India level,we get maximum entries from Pune and Mumbai. Pune entries are generally technology based which are conceptualised and developed in the city. We also promote social engineering projects that can be useful for the rural people,” said Joshi.

He said the competition gets around 60 entries every year. “We select 16 of them on merit through a rigorous process of interviews. These 16 innovators get a chance to present their project before industry people. Some of the innovators have been successful in getting sponsors or industry partners for their projects through this networking process,” said Joshi.

He also said that the Pune chapter of IIT-B Alumni Association has tied up with IIM- Ahmedabad for mentoring some of the innovators. “From this year, the IIM-A will select some of the innovations on their own and will mentor them for making the projects commercially viable,” he said.
