Savitribai Phule Pune University senate approves Rs 685-cr budget

Focus on start-up cell to fund business ideas, assistance to needy students, funding for research.

SPPU759 Compared to last year, the budget has increased by Rs 43 crore to meet expenses in initiatives such as e-learning and fee exemption for students from drought-prone areas.

A start-up cell to fund ideas by students and teachers for new business ventures, a think-tank for discussing government policies, special scheme for assistance to needy students, funding for research and more forms part of the Rs 685 crore budget approved unanimously by the Senate at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Saturday.

The senate meeting was attended by nominated members only as the term of the elected members ended last year. As compared to last year, the budget of SPPU has increased by Rs 43.58 crore which will tide over expenses for new initiatives in students’ welfare, e-learning and exemption of fees for students from drought-prone areas in the state.


Presented by V B Gaikwad, director, Board of College and University Development (BCUD), the main provisions under the varsity budget includes Rs 5.54 crore for development works, Rs 4.42 crore for improvement in basic facilities for students (hostels, libraries, health scheme, etc.). For infrastructural improvements, a budget of Rs 19.92 crore was earmarked, while Rs 79.60 crore was provisioned for building and development of structures within the varsity campus.

Meanwhile, the start-up cell at the university campus will help in funding new ideas and research and promote collaborations with the industry to implement such projects. It will also guide students and teachers to make the best use of the available policies of the government. The cell is aimed towards fostering entrepreneurship and generating employment.


Vice-chancellor Wasudeo Gade who presided over the Senate meeting said that the idea to set up the cell is to enable students’ ideas get converted into industry products. “Students have ideas but they don’t know how to prepare proposals for the industry and check how bankable the products are. This will be the work of this cell,” he said.
