Raising of funds delays Pune Metro work

The Union government had sought queries on raising funds for the implementation of Pune Metro rail project.

After being on hold for long due to technical issues raised by citizens groups, the Pune Metro rail project is now getting delayed over the raising of funds for its construction work even as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is exploring a loan from the World Bank for the project.

“The Union government had sought queries on raising funds for the implementation of Pune Metro rail project. Thus, the PMC has explored the possibility of a loan from World Bank for the purpose. There have been deliberations with the World Bank officials who have shown interest in investing in the Pune Metro rail project,” said Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar.

The financial details of Rs 6,000 crore loan from World Bank have been submitted to the state government, he said, adding the state finance department scrutinised it and would soon be forwarding it to the Union urban development department. The proposal then would be taken up in the public investment board meeting of the Centre before sending for a final nod of the Centre.

Mayor Prashant Jagtap said the Metro rail proposal is pending for long with the Union government and it would be taken up in the meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis.

“We would urge the chief minister to give a proper assurance on the actual implementation of Pune Metro rail project,” he said, adding there would be various other city issues in the meeting that would be attended by Union Minister Prakash Jawadekar and former union minister Sharad Pawar along with legislators and city MP.

Ruling NCP in PMC had been expressing displeasure over the Centre making very less budgetary provision for Pune Metro rail.
