Acting on a tip-off, the police on Sunday arrested a 40-year-old woman along with four others for killing her own son over three months ago.
On December 2, last year, a 20-year-old criminal on police records who had also become a headache for his family members, relatives and neighbours because of his drinking habit and bad behaviour, went missing from his house in Kishkinda Nagar in Kothrud. On that day, he was badly beaten up allegedly by his family, neighbours and relatives for creating a ruckus. His family kept telling people he was under treatment.
Three months later, the crime branch got a tip-off about the mysterious disappearance of the youth by the name of Akshay Malpote. Subsequent probe revealed that his murder and disposal of the body was allegedly carried out by none other than his mother with the help of relatives.
The police have now arrested the mother and four others for the murder. They have also recovered remains of the body from a spot at Tamhini Ghat, around 80 kilometres from Pune, where the corpse was allegedly dumped.
Police say Akshay had six offences registered against him, including one case of attempt to murder.
Police constable Vasant Khandare got a tip-off on March 11 that a criminal on police records from Kishkinda Nagar slum area in Kothrud was murdered by his relatives and his body dumped in Tamhini Ghat.
A team headed by senior inspector Sushma Chavan began a probe into the case. Some local residents of Kishkinda Nagar told police that on the night of December 2, some of them had seen Malpote being beaten brutally by some relatives and neighbours. They had even seen his mother hitting him with a iron rob on head. He was then bundled in a blanket and people were told he was taken to hospital.
Police have now arrested his mother Indubai Malpote (40), cousin Ganpat Malpote (32) and three other neighbours, Babaji Yadav (19), Arul Adsul (50) and Pappu Bhintade (22), for murder.
