After the Union Cabinet’s nod, the implementation of the Pune Metro Rail Project has been initiated with immediate effect. The officers of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRC) have already started a detailed survey of the site.

“The officers of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd have started the work on the implementation of Pune metro rail. A site survey of the proposed project is being done to address the problems likely to be faced on the ground during the construction of the rail route,” said municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar.
He said the detailed project report (DPR) for the rail would not be affected, except for some minor changes depending on the ground situation. “The minor changes clause already exists in the DPR so that is not a problem. It has been done during the implementation of metro rail projects in other cities too,” Kumar said.
The implementation of the project would require additional space during the construction of rail route and the PMC administration is working on making it available, he added.
The metro rail team has also identified a place to start its office in the city, so that its staff could be stationed here permanently, the commissioner added.
On the loan cleared by the Union government for the project, he said, “The implementing agency would get the loan which would only be applicable for the Pune Metro Rail Project and it cannot be used anywhere else.” The Union government had approved a proposal seeking loan of Rs 6,325.5 crore from the World Bank (WB) and China-based Asian Infrastructure Investments Bank (AIIB) for the project.
On the date set for commencement of the implementation, he said, “There has been no formal communication on the function for laying the foundation stone yet.”
On December 7, the Union Cabinet had approved the implementation of the first phase of the project, having a total length of 31.254 km of two routes from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi. The PCMC to Swargate route would be part underground and elevated, while the Vanaz-Ramwadi route would be completed elevated. The project would require 31.57 hectare government land and 12.68 hectare private land.
