Pune: Held in custodial death case, former cop dies of heart attack in jail

According to the police, Nitin Sathe was detained by the Ahmednagar police in a theft case and he died in police custody in May 2015.

A former police officer who was arrested in connection with a custodial death case in Ahmednagar died of heart attack at the Yerwada Central Jail Friday.

Police have identified the deceased as Dnyaneshwar Dhokle.

According to the police, Nitin Sathe was detained by the Ahmednagar police in a theft case and he died in police custody in May 2015. An offence in this case was registered at the Kotwali police station. Dhokle was the then in-charge of the police station. He was suspended from service, along with a sub-inspector and four constables. The state criminal investigation department conducted an investigation and arrested Dhokle on charges of murder. Police said that Dhokle retired from service but as he failed to get bail, he had been in prison since March 2016.
