Pune: 18-year-old, riding sans helmet, dies in mishap

AN 18-year-old college student was killed after his sports bike rammed into a divider while riding on Hadapsar Road Sunday morning. The police said the youth was not wearing a helmet. The Wanawadi police have identified the deceased as Pouras Nandu Waghmare, a resident of Sawata Nagar in Hadapsar. Waghmare was pursuing a bachelors degree in science from a college in Pune, said the police.

The incident took place in front of the main gate of Army Institute of Physical Training (AIPT) around 8.30 am on Sunday while on his way from Ramtekdi to Camp. Investigating officer Assistant Inspector Devidas Kungar of Wanawadi police station said, “We suspect he lost his balance and rammed into the divider. He had sustained multiple injuries on hands, legs, chest and head and was declared dead on arriving the hospital. We have come to know that the youth’s parents had bought him the bike recently and had celebrated his birthday just a few days back.“

“Waghmare was pursuing his bachelors degree in science a city college. We have been told that he was fond of sports biking. His father is in construction business,” Kungar added. Two more have been killed in two separate accidents in the city on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, 30-year-old Somnath Niture of Aurad in Bidar, Karnataka, who was visiting his sister here was killed when a speeding tempo hit him while crossing the Pune-Nashik Highway near Old Octroi booth around 11.20 am. The tempo driver has been booked in the case but is yet to be arrested.
