INDIAN Navy’s premier technical training establishment, INS Shivaji, located in Lonavla near Pune, is set to get a state-of-the-art Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) Training Facility, which will house a modern NBC emergency simulator and sophisticated laboratories for preparation of real time situations.
INS Shivaji, established as HMIS Shivaji in 1945 as a Naval training facility for British Royal Indian Navy, currently runs over 80 different courses every year for sailors and officers from Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and navies of friendly foreign countries.

An officer from INS Shivaji said, “This facility is a part of ongoing effort to enhance the training capabilities and in turn, the preparedness. We already have two simulators, one for the damage control scenarios and one for fire emergencies. This third simulator is for NBC emergencies. This capability is being added in the light of NBC threat especially from the non-state actors.”

Vice Admiral AV Subhedar, Chief of Materiel of Indian Navy, who was on a visit to INS Shivaji on Monday laid the foundation stone for the NBC Training Facility building.
The training facility building will house a modern NBC simulator and well equipped, sophisticated NBC laboratories for creating real life scenarios. The project is being executed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), which is an undertaking of Ministry of Defence is slated for commissioning in September 2018.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Rear Adm Shekhar Mital (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of the GSL said, “We are the market leaders in Naval simulators. We have provided damage control and fire emergency simulators to Naval establishments in the past and now we are extending that capability to NBC situations.”
Adm Mital Added, “The facility that we are building at INS Shivaji will include real-size structures, equipment and laboratories that will simulate the fallout of an NBC emergency, the detection of the threat and subsequent actions that need to be taken. We have always delivered our products in a timely manner and we plan to complete the work in two years.”
A Navy officer said, “The simulator would be constructed on a steel structure similar to a warship, and will have the equipment for actions like like Closing Down, Pre-wetting and Platform Decontamination in case of an NBC emergency.”
Rohini Subhedar, wife of Adm Subhedar laid the foundation stone for commencement of construction of the Naval Band Accommodation and instruments store building.
