Need to preserve our cinematic legacy, says Naseeruddin Shah

Film Heritage Foundation’s Founder Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur felicitated Paulo Cherchi Usai and David Walsh of FIAF, who has designed the workshop for their service.

On the occasion,Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, who was invited as the chief guest at the inauguration of Film Preservation & Restoration Workshop held at NFAI, said there is an urgent need for India to save its cinematic legacy after much has been lost over the years for unknown reasons.

“I started comparitively late in the film industry, about 40 year ago. But still some of my films are lost. I can imagine what must have happened to the films before. I think this endevour to train people in the highly specialized field of film archiving is essential if we are to save our heritage,” said Shah.

He mentioned the founder of NFAI P K Nair, who couldn’t make it to the programme as he is critically ill and bed ridden. “When I came to FTII in 1973, we were encouraged to watch upto four movies a day. Some of them at times were intolerable, to be honest. We used to walk in and out. But a thing that remained constat was this studious gentleman, Nair saab, who took copious notes,” said Shah.


“I must say that the Saviours of the films are as important as their creators. Therefore, I dedicate this workshop to P K Nair,” Dungarpur said.

Delivering his address, NFAI’s Director Prakash Magdum said that NFAI is proud to have preserved over 50 films of Naseeruddin Shah and many other filmstars, to which Naseeruddin promptly replied, “I’m glad that NFAI has saved 50 films of mine. Many of them are lost, notwithstanding the fact that some of them deserved to be lost.
