The Pune city crime branch arrested four people in connection with the murder of Mahendra Mallav (48), a councillor in Shirur Municipal Council and also its former vice-president. Probe revealed that the murder was the fallout of a dispute which had taken place between two groups after Mallav had opposed a birthday celebration programme.
Mallav was hacked to death with sharp weapons in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon by four people on a busy street in Shirur town, after which a mob of more than 500 people gathered outside Shirur police station. Stone pelting was also reported in the area forcing police to deploy additional teams.
In the FIR, Mallav’s nephew had named two people-Praveen Kale and Vishal Kale-whom he had seen attacking the councillor with sharp sickles and swords. During investigation, police received a tip-off about the suspects, and accordingly, a trap was laid near an old octroi booth in Shirur on Monday afternoon.
The four arrested are Praveen Kale (23), Vishal Kale (21), Sunny Yadav (19) and Rupesh Lunia (19), all residents of Shirur. Police officials said that the situation in Shirur was peaceful and Mallav’s last rites were performed on Monday amidst heavy police presence.
