For second day, students go without food at university

Students of the University of Pune on Sunday continued their agitation against the poor quality of food at the campus.

Students of the University of Pune on Sunday continued their agitation against the poor quality of food at the campus. On Saturday, the students had held a protest outside vice-chancellor W N Gade’s office after insects were found in the food served at the refectory.

The students are demanding that instead of having a private contractor run the catering facility, the varsity do so on its own.

“We did not eat the food at the refectory today, too. In the last few years, several private contractors have been given charge of the three canteens and refectories on the campus but the quality of food has gone from bad to worse. We had registered our protest with earlier V-Cs,but nothing has changed,” said a post-graduate student.

Students added that in the three canteens, the prices charged are higher than the rates fixed as per the University norms. “For instance,a plate of misal pav should cost Rs 12 as per the varsity norms, but the canteen contactors charge Rs 20 for it,” said a student.

Gade said,“As of now,we don’t have the infrastructure to run a mess for so many students. I’m not sure if their suggestion is feasible. We will hold a meeting with the students and discuss the issue in order to reach a solution that is agreeable to all.”

Students have demanded that the V-C also look into the issue of dismal quality of food at the girls’ hostel refectory, the inadequate number of seats available at the girls’ hostels and the absence of a reading room there. “We also want to raise the issue of lack of drinking water and proper toilets at the Jayakar library with the V-C,” said another student.
