FDA raids 366 paan stall owners in Pune and PCMC, seizes gutkha from 136 stall owners

FIRs have been registered against the paan stall owners under section 328, a non-bailable section with punishment up to 10 years, for causing hurt through poison, said Girish Bapat, Pune guardian minister and head of FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad has raided 366 paan stall owners on Thursday and has seized gutkha, scented tobacco, paan masala, mawa from 136 paan stalls.

The FDA has seized stocks worth over Rs 5 lakh and the administration is all set to register an FIR against them.

Shiv Kumar Kodgire, Assistant Commissioner, FDA, said that 60 squads were taken out to several districts in a special drive on Thursday and tobacco related products worth Rs 5 lakh were seized from small paan stall owners at 136 places in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

In Pune, gutkha worth Rs 1.85 lakh was also found in one vehicle. Pune guardian minister and head of FDA Girish Bapat said that such drives were conducted in the entire state and for the city the squad was readied with the help of officials from Brihanmumbai, Thane and Sambhaji Nagar divisions as well as staff from dental and pharmacist divisions as there was less staff in the city office.

Addressing a press meet, he said that FIRs were registered under section 328, causing hurt through poison. This is a non-bailable section and the punishment is up to 10 years.

“It is upto them that these paan stall owners do not sell such products which are harmful for health,” said Bapat.

Additionally, he said that he would send his team of officials to find out the source of supply of gutkha to these shops. He said that severe action would be taken against the suppliers too.
