Don’t apply indelible ink on left hand, State Election Commission tells Maharashtra government

The election commission has started rolling out the process of holding elections of 212 municipal councils across the state for which voting is scheduled on December 14, 18 and January 8.

THE STATE election commission has directed the state government to ensure that banks and post offices do not apply indelible ink on the left hand of citizens’ while they exchange the scrapped Rs. 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes, so that there is no confusion in the forthcoming elections in the state.

In a communication to the state chief secretary, the election commission said that it has come to its notice that the banks and postal department have been applying indelible ink marks on citizens’ fingers. The election commission has started rolling out the process of holding elections of 212 municipal councils across the state for which voting is scheduled on December 14, 18 and January 8.

“The indelible ink is applied on the left hand finger of the voters during voting. If the voter does not have a left hand only then the ink is applied on the finger of right hand. The state government should ask all the concerned offices and banks not to put any ink mark on left hand finger of the citizen while enabling exchange of abolished notes with new one and on right hand finger of those without left hand,” it stated.
