TWO elderly persons and a driver sustained injuries after the car they were travelling in hit a stationary crane and then caught fire on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway near Kamshet Tunnel Sunday morning.
According to Kamshet police post, the incident took place around 10.30 am when three members of a family from Mumbai were on their way to Pune in a car they had hired.
Assistant subinspector Dattatraya Khandagale of Kamshet police post, who is investigating the case, said, “Around 10.30 am, as the car was approaching Kamshet tunnel, it hit a stationary broken down crane. After the impact, the front portion of the car caught fire. But the rescue teams were nearby and three passengers and the driver were taken out before the fire could spread.” The two persons who sustained injuries have been identified as Mahadev Dikshit (94) and his wife Malati Dikshit (86). The two were taken to Lokmanya Hospital. The driver of the car, Bipin Gawari (31), who sustained injuries on his chest ribs, is being treated at a hospital in Kamshet.
The police said the rescue teams later doused the fire and traffic, which slowed down briefly, resumed.
