A 20-year-old girl pursuing her Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river on Saturday after she left home in a fit of rage because her mother scolded her for listening to songs on the cellphone.
Wakad police have identified the girl as Mrignayani Prakash Pachpinde, a resident of Kalewadi Gaothan.
According to police, Mrignayani was pursuing her BCA from a college in Wakad. Her father works as a carpenter while her mother is a nurse at DY Patil hospital. Inspector Amrut Marathe of Wakad police said, “Mrignayani’s mother scolded her on Saturday as she was listening to songs on her cell phone. She asked her to leave the phone aside and help her in the kitchen. She left the home in a fit of rage and went to the riverbank around 200 metres away from their home in Kalewadi and jumped into the river.”
Police said she jumped from a spot near Jotiba Phule Park located on the Pavana riverside around 11.30 am. Some people who were in the park, saw Mrignayani jumping but by the time they reached the spot, she had drowned. Inspector Marathe added, “At the spot where she jumped into the river, the water is heavily contaminated with sewage and is very deep. The local residents jumped into the river and took her out.” She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Her body was handed over to the family after post mortem was performed. Police said they will be recording statements of the family members to probe further.
