THE CIVIC body demolished the front section of the popular South Mumbai eatery Saltwater Cafe for the second time on Wednesday just days after it restored the portion of the restaurant that was demolished last month.
Saltwater is one of seven restaurants on Veer Nariman Road which were found to have violated fire safety norms by setting up outdoor seating in the mandatory open space in front of the restaurant.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been locked in a legal tussle with the owners of Saltwater Cafe in two parallel cases in the High Court as well as the City Civil Court for the last month. Last week, the Bombay High Court had pulled up the BMC for not repairing the section of the restaurant which they had demolished last month despite a stay order.
However, with the restoration work complete and the stay order lifted, the BMC went ahead with the demolition. Meanwhile, H East ward officials also carried out a demolition drive on 15 illegal shops on St Anthony Road and Kurla Kalina Road. In their statement, the BMC said that the shops which were demolished were on the road and on the footpaths which have now been cleared.
