Allegations of corruption to the tune of 1.68 crore for expenses on picnics for BMC school students were levelled against Mayor Snehal Ambekar on Wednesday. The standing committee members stated that there was lack of transparency in the allocation of funds and demanding a thorough inquiry.

The squabble in the weekly meeting of the standing committee saw Sena leaders pitted against BJP leaders once again, with at least two BJP members speaking in support of a Congress corporator who raised the subject.

Congress corporator Pravin Chheda alleged that senior officials of the Education Department were instructed to give contracts to an individual named Yasin Tamboli. He added that he would write to the Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta demanding an inquiry into the matter.

The matter pertains to funds for at least 37,000 students of classes IV, VII and VIII from BMC schools across the city.

At the standing committee meeting, education committee chairperson Ritu Tawde of the BJP said she wasn’t informed about the matter and that BEST buses should have been used instead to ferry the students to the picnic spots. “When a BEST bus can be hired for Rs. 4000, why are there plans to book private buses that charge twice the amount?” said Tawde.

Defending the mayor, senior Sena corporator and leader of the house Trushna Vishwasrao said Ambekar was not acquainted with Tamboli. “These are baseless allegations. I spoke to the mayor and she said that she has never heard of anyone called Yasin Tamboli. None of these allegations have been verified,” she said.

In agreement to Chheda, Shelar, also of the BJP, stated that it was difficult to believe that there was no response for the e-tenders.
“Last time, there were enough people who had shown an interest in organising these picnics. The authorities must conduct an enquiry to find out who this Tamboli is. They should also question the administrative officers who are engaged in such activities,” he said.
