A RETIRED scientist was arrested here Wednesday on charges of sexually abusing three minor girls he claimed to have “adopted”.
Maqsood Ansari, 72, who police said retired as a scientist from NEERI, was arrested after the mother of a friend of one of the girls alerted the Dhantoli police station.
Police said the victim aged 16 had confided in her friend that she had been abused by Ansari. The friend in turn told her mother about it.
“We have slapped the POCSO Act against the accused. He denied the charges but medical check-up of the girls has established that the eldest of them was subjected to intercourse while there was an attempt on the second girl aged 11. There were no signs of abuse on the youngest girl, who is six years old,” said police inspector Rajan Mane.
Ansari, who Mane confirmed had retired from NEERI, had married twice but both his wives left him. “While we have no information on his first wife, who left him more than 25 years ago, but we know the second wife’s whereabouts. She is believed to have left him as he was allegedly sexually abusing the girls. We plan to speak to his second wife,” said Mane.
“We have come across no legal proof of his claim of having adopted the girls. We have gathered that he brought all three girls from Amravati. We have traced their biological mothers and are trying to contact them,” added Mane.
Ansari has been remanded in police custody till Friday.
