Two women died and four others were injured after the roof of their fourth flat in a building they were living in came crashing down – possibly a result of incessant rains – Saturday night.

The disaster management cell of Mumbai’s civic body informed that the accident took place at a G+4 structure near the rationing office in Behramnagar, Bandra (east). The fire brigade informs that the incident might have taken place at around 9.40 pm. While Yasmin Shaikh (27)Sarina Shaikh (13) lost their lives, Balkish Ali, Jibran Shaikh, Farida Shaikh and Ishrat Qureshi were rushed to Bhabha Hospital. Ishrat has been discharged, but the three others are still recuperating.

The rescue operation concluded last night, confirmed the Mumbai fire brigade office. The collapse had taken place after season’s heaviest downpour in the city. On Friday, all the three suburban train routes had come to a halt, and severe water-logging was reported at more than 200 locations bringing road traffic to a halt. The 283 mm rainfall recorded at Santacruz weather station was the highest in 24 hours for June in a decade. The highest June downpour in the last 10 years was 299 mm on June 10, 1991.
