The Mumbai police, probing the alleged custodial rape and extortion of money from a 29-year-old model, have reconstructed the entire sequence of events leading to the crime.
On Saturday, the victim was taken to the three spots related to the incident and a ‘panchnama’ was conducted in her presence, police sources told The Sunday Express. On Thursday, the police had carried out a similar exercise with the victim’s male friend, who is a key witness.
According to police sources, the victim was called in around 4 pm on Saturday to the crime branch unit in Andheri and was taken to Holiday Inn hotel at Sakinaka. From there she was taken to Sakinaka police station and finally to Sangharsh Nagar police chowky, where she was allegedly sexually abused by suspended assistant police inspector Sunil Khatpe.

At all the three locations, the victim was asked to identify the exact spot in the presence of panch (independent) witnesses.
Three policemen — API Khatpe and API Suresh Suryavanshi and police constable Yogesh Ponde — were arrested, along with five informers, on April 23 after the model approached Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria alleging that she was taken to the Sangharsh Nagar police chowky on the night of April 2 and held there till April 3 morning.
The victim alleged that the accused extorted nearly Rs 10 lakh from her and a male friend. She also claimed that Khatpe forced her to perform oral sex on him twice at the police outpost.
“The reconstruction of the entire episode facilitates investigation and therefore the exercise was conducted. The victim and her male friend have identified the exact spots relating to the crime such as the spot outside the Holiday Inn hotel from where the accused ushered them into a Tata Safari jeep, the detection room at the Sakinaka police station where they were first taken and where the demand for money was made and also the tiny room inside the police outpost where the victim was allegedly sexually abused twice,” explained an officer.
The police on Wednesday recorded the statement of the victim’s male friend. They also collected the photograph clicked by the victim with her cellphone of the alleged ‘bite marks’ she had sustained from the sexual assault. The photograph was clicked by the victim on April 3, a few hours after the incident. The photograph will be sent to the Kalina Forensic Sciences Laboratory ( FSL) for further examination. Earlier this week, the police had sent the the clothes she wore on the day of the incident and her cellphone to the FSL for further examination.
A source close to the victim also said the model received a call from one of the defence lawyers on Friday, but she did not answer it.
“Other than the calls of police officers, family and friends, the victim refrains from answering any other calls. On Friday, she received a call from an unknown number. When we checked on Truecaller, the name displayed was Sanjay Hulyalkar. We later learnt that he is a defence lawyer in the case,” the source told The Sunday Express. But when this newspaper called Hulyalkar, he denied calling the victim. “I do not have her number so the question of calling her does not arise. You could check my Call Data Record to confirm the same,” Hulyalkar asserted. Hulyalkar represents the woman informer Ayesha Malviya, who is among those arrested in the case.
