A 26-year-old woman who allegedly strangulated a 43-year-old man inside his SUV was arrested by Santacruz police on Monday.
According to the police, Ronita, who was in a relationship with Tilakraj Rajput, allegedly strangulated him with a dupatta on Sunday night, after the duo had an argument.
Rajput’s body was discovered by a police patrol team that found the door of his Mahindra XUV ajar and Rajput lying unconscious inside. Based on an investigation, the Santacruz police arrested Ronita, who was the last person to be seen with Rajput before his body was found.
The police said Rajput ran a laundry business and lived with his wife and two children in Rajput cottage on K K Ganguly Marg in Santacruz (West). He and Ronita were in private service and allegedly had been in a relationship for the past six years.
A police officer said Ronita got married nearly eight months ago and following her marriage, did not want to continue the relationship. Rajput, however, did not agree and forced her to continue the relationship.
Rajput, under the influence of alcohol, called up Ronita on Sunday and they had an altercation on the same issue, said the police. “After fighting over the phone, Ronita and Rajput met in his car. Ronita said they again fought for an hour. She was furious and strangulated him in the car. She then fled,” said senior inspector of Santacruz police station Shantanu Pawar.
The front door of the vehicle was, however, left open. A patrol vehicle from the Santacruz police station was passing by the LIC office on S V Road in Santacruz and saw the parked vehicle. Upon checking, they found Rajput lying inside in an unconscious condition. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead.
The strangulation marks on the throat of the deceased made the police conclude that he had been murdered.
Following this, the police started making inquiries about Rajput. They found that Rajput had been in an extramarital relationship with Ronita and was last seen with her.
The call data record of his mobile phone too has confirmed that she was the last person Rajput had spoken to. The police found her at her home in Vile Parle and detained her for questioning. Following sustained interrogation, Ronita broke down and confessed to her crime, the police said.
Ronita claimed she had murdered Rajput since he was not willing to let go of her even after her marriage and creating problems in her marital life.
The police are also questioning her if there was anyone else who helped her in committing the murder, the police said.
Pawar said they produced Ronita before a local court on Monday and she was remanded in police custody.
“We will be questioning her further to confirm if the version of events that she has is true or not. Also, we want to find out if she is trying to protect someone else involved in the murder,” Pawar said.
