A charred body was discovered by the disaster management force on Saturday, after the cooling operations were completed at Ghas Compound in Jogeshwari West, where a major fire broke out Friday afternoon. The body is suspected to be that of a man aged around 22 years. “The investigation is under way. We have sent the body to JJ Hospital and are waiting for the results,” said Subhash Khanvilkar, senior inspector at Oshiwara police station.

While the cause of the fire remains unknown, a firefighter confirmed that six cylinder blasts, both LPG and commercial, aggravated the fire. “Combustible materials like plastic sheets and wood present at the site aggravated the spread of fire. Around 250 shops were gutted. This constitutes about 25 per cent of the total market,” said the firefighter. Contrary to initial reports suggesting that there were no casualties, a firefighter was injured during the dousing of fire and is being treated for minor injuries.

Ghas Compound is the city’s second largest furniture market, and deals primarily with second hand furniture. The market is filed with not only furniture shops but also plastic godowns and garages. The Mumbai fire brigade took over nine hours to put down the fire that broke out at 12:30 pm Friday.

”Would really like to thank the fire brigade and the BMC workers for working tirelessly towards dousing the fire, despite it being a holiday. Without their support, almost the entire market would have been affected and the loss would have surpassed many crores,” said Changez Multani, corporator from the area.
