The Central Railway on Tuesday introduced another 12-car rake in addition to the one running on the Harbour Line.

Another rake of 12 cars will be added from Wednesday on the Harbour Line which will make the total as 39 services for the 12-coach trains. In total, 584 services run on Harbour Line every day.

The first 12-car rake was inducted into service on the Harbour Line three weeks back on a trial basis. Fourteen services of the same were planned throughout the day with a motive to check its running time.

An additional 11 services of the second 12-car rake has been planned to facilitate commute.

The addition of the 12-car coach brings in two more trains to handle the commuter rush of morning peak hours and three more train services to manage the evening rush.

The introduction of the 12-coach train was likely to increase the passenger capacity intake by 33 per cent.

Commuters had complained of a problem in signage and not adequate 12-coach train services to match the crowd in the peak hours.

The addition of another rake of 12-coach trains is likely to balance the commuter rush during peak hours.

Narendra Patil, Central Railway, Chief Public Relations Officer, said, “We will be gradually introducing more 12-coach train service like on the Harbor Line. A positive response from the commuters towards the pilot 12-coach train introduced on the Harbour Line has facilitated in getting the other one soon. We are positive on converting at least a hundred services of trains into 12-coaches by the end of July.”

The project to better the services on the Harbour Line is part of the Rs 714-crore project under the second phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.
