AN 81-year-old woman was found dead inside her Chembur home Wednesday morning. Victim Niranjana Suresh Modi had been living alone since her husband’s death last year due to a heart attack.
“Ever since her husband’s sudden death, Modi had instructed her neighbours to check on her every morning in case her safety door was not opened by 7 am. Modi had given her neighbours a spare key to use,” said Uttam Kolekar, senior inspector, Govandi police.
Modi lived in a two-bedroom apartment on the fourth floor in Chembur’s Saraswati Society.

Around 9 am, when her neighbour Amin Shetty (30) did not find Modi’s security door open, he used the spare key to enter the flat, said the police.
“Shetty said Modi was seen with blood on her head. She was lying on the floor of the living room with her arm stretched trying to reach her phone. The trail of blood inside Modi’s apartment indicates that she must have fallen in the kitchen and then rolled forward to the living room,” Kolekar added.
Investigators said the incident could have occurred late Tuesday.
According to Shetty’s statement to the police, he had earlier found Modi having fallen off her bed at least twice in the recent past and also cited incidents of her having a fall in the market.
The police said Modi had no children and her closest relatives in the city were two nieces to whom her body was handed over to Wednesday afternoon.
“Preliminary probe reveals that Modi was diabetic. Her cause of death is her head injury. An accidental death report has been registered into the matter,” Kolekar said.
